Much more fun than shopping in a store and a great chance to practice ‘people watching’.
Similar markets although smaller in size are held throughout the week in the surrounding towns.
Dama Castellana
This folkloristic reconstruction of a medieval battle between Conegliano and Treviso takes place every year at the beginning of summer since the 1960s.
Two teams challenge each other to a game of chess which is rendered more interesting by the Renaissance costumes worn by the live players. On Saturday night the prelude gives spectators a first glance of the beautiful pawns while the full game is played on Sunday offering the public a remarkable show of music and dance in the backdrop of passionate rivalry.

Venice Regata Storica – September 5th-6th 2009
The Regata Storica is a unique sport that has been practiced in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years. Today the event is particularly well-known for the spectacular historical water display that precedes the race when scores of 16th century-style boats with gondoliers in period costume carry the Doge, the Doge’s wife and all the highest ranking Venetian officials up the Grand Canal in a brightly coloured parade.
A truly unforgettable sight and a genuine reconstruction of the glorious past of one of the most powerful and influential Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean.
Venice Carnival
Carnival starts around two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ends on Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday.
Carnival dates therefore vary in step with Easter; the 2010 Carnival will be celebrated in Venice from February 5th to the 16th.
Although a very spectacular time to visit Venice thanks to the interesting masks and costumes a word of warning is necessary: Carnival is believed to attract approximately 1 million people over a period of 2 weeks so you may experience huge crowds and queues everywhere during this period.
